Doggy Parks
We finally got round to taking Reggie to a doggy park last weekend. You are not supposed to let the dog off the lead anywhere here apart from in these certain allocated parks, doggy parks. There are 4 in our area, run by the local forest preserve, and they have allocated a piece of land from some of the forest preserves over to doggy parks. These are fairly large areas that are completely fenced in, and some include water or woods. It seems that a lot of owners take their dogs to these at weekends, whilst during the week the hounds are just let outside the door. So this is a chance for them to go wild.
We have no idea if Reggie has ever been to one before, as we did not know there was such a thing as a dog park when we got her, so we didn’t know to ask that question. But judging from the way she reacts to other dogs round here, we would guess not, or at least not for a long time.
But we were really pleased with how she did. Just a few minutes after we arrived, we caught up with a group of adults standing around chatting while their 6 or 7dogs were playing. All the dogs were varying shades of brown, so Reggie blended in well. She was a little snappy at first if they got too close and personal with her, but very quickly took part in the play and joined in with chasing the sticks and general fun. We then walked round with one other guy and his dog, and she seemed to have a whale of a time.
You have to buy a permit to use these parks. We just got a day pass for that time, but you can get an annual pass, and it covers all 4 of the forest preserve parks for only $44, so we will definitely be getting that. We will only be able to go on weekends mostly, as they are all too far away for me to walk to, but it was great fun for all of us.
